It teaches that one must be prepared to take in the teachings of Christ if they wish to grow in faith. Yet another parable He uses is one depicting a farmer who wanted to get rid of weeds which had infested his farm and were destroying his wheat plants. Jesus compares this fruitful seed to the kingdom of heaven. The first two perished while the mustard seed thrived to produce a great harvest. Some of the seeds fell by the wayside, others fell in stony places and others fell into fertile soil. Jesus uses a parable that references a farmer who planted some mustard seeds. This meant that He only wanted those who were serious about the word of God to get his message in a clear manner. He answered them by saying that He did this so that only those with ears could hear him. The disciples questioned Jesus on His use of parables. Also, Jesus explains to his disciples why he teaches with parables. In Matthew 13 Jesus continues teaching with new parables concerning weeds among the wheat and the yeast and the mustard seed.
